Deadbolt Repair & Installation
Deadbolts are essential to securing the home, work area, storage facilities and other properties that require security measures to be safe. Sometimes called “deadlocks”, deadbolts consist of a steel cylinder – the “bolt” – that sinks deep into a corresponding recess in the doorjamb. The bolt locks in place and cannot be moved to the open position without rotating the locking mechanism using the correct key. Because of this deadbolts provide a higher degree of security than regular door locks, especially when used in conjunction with standard spring bolt locks (as that found in doorknobs). Deadbolts are rarely used as the primary means for latching a door shut but are adequate auxiliary locks.
Deadbolts come in three basic varieties. Tubular (cylindrical) dead locks are the most widely used as they are relatively easy to install. But their price and quality vary widely; inexpensive ones tend to offer inferior security while the pricey ones are of higher quality and much more secure. Rim deadlocks are mounted on the interior surface of the door. They have a latch on the inside that opens the lock when pressed or turned. On the outside the door is opened using a key. Mortise deadbolts feature strong, heavy duty projection bolts and offer a high degree of security.
No matter which model you select, deadlocks can provide you with additional security for your home or business. You must have a key to open the door, and techniques that may work to open a spring bolt door won’t work for a deadbolt. But there are some disadvantages to using deadlocks. Since the door can only be locked using a key, it’s common for users to forget to lock up when they leave.
Besides security, deadbolts these days also function as decorative fixtures, and many designs are available to match the style and look of your interior.
